School Number One-Abandoned North Dakota

School Number One-Abandoned North Dakota

In April 2012, one of my photographer friends and I took a trip to North Dakota to document some of the abandoned structures. I did some online research beforehand, and it paid off, with this image of School Number One in Eddy County. This school sits all by itself at the junction of a couple of gravel country roads not far from the near-ghost town of Brantford. The day we chose to go on our expedition, what had been a great week of weather turned into an all day rain. In some ways, the gloomy weather adds to the mood of these abandoned places. The unpainted wood turns dark when it gets wet, the sky is dark and heavy with rain clouds. Even though it was about 49 degrees with a constant rain, some of the images we took, like this one, made it worth it. I didn’t find any information on this school as far as when it was last open, but I would guess it hasn’t been used since the 60’s. There was still an old partially destroyed piano inside, but that was it.
